Frequently Asked Questions

What is DLA (Dislocation Allowance)?

A one-time payment to help with non-reimbursable moving expenses, things like unpacking, cleaning, new curtains, setup fees. DLA amount is based on your rank and whether you have dependents. It's taxable and typically $1,100-$4,000.

What's the difference between a regular move and PPM/DITY?

Government (HHG) moves: The military arranges and pays movers directly. Personally Procured Move (PPM, formerly DITY): You arrange the move yourself and get reimbursed 95% of what the government would have paid. Savvy PPM moves can net you $3,000-$15,000+ depending on distance and weight.

What is TLE (Temporary Lodging Expense)?

Covers hotel + meal costs while you're between homes at your new duty station. Up to 14 days in CONUS (like Jacksonville), up to 60 days OCONUS. Rates vary by location, Jacksonville is ~$250-290/day with dependents.

How is MALT (mileage) calculated?

The government pays $0.22 per mile (2026 rate) for your Privately Owned Vehicle (POV) from origin to destination. On a 1,000-mile move, that's $220. It's paid per vehicle, up to 2 POVs.

Are these reimbursements taxable?

DLA, per diem, MALT, and TLE are NOT taxable (they reimburse expenses). PPM/DITY profit (the amount you pocket after actual moving expenses) IS taxable as income. Keep all receipts, you can deduct actual moving costs from PPM gain.
